Why Mulch Makes a Difference
Mulch does more than just look nice. It keeps soil moist, stops weeds from growing, regulates soil temperature, and slowly breaks down to add nutrients. Your plants grow healthier and your beds need less maintenance when you keep good mulch in place.
Without regular mulching, your flower beds dry out faster in summer, freeze deeper in winter, and fill up with weeds. Bare soil also erodes during heavy rain and compacts over time, making it harder for plant roots to grow. Fresh mulch every year or two keeps your beds in top shape.

Choosing the Right Mulch
Not all mulch works the same way. Here are your options and what works best in Irondequoit:
Hardwood Mulch
The most common choice. Natural brown color that blends with most landscapes. Breaks down in 1 to 2 years and adds organic matter to soil. Good moisture retention and weed suppression. Budget friendly option that still looks professional.
Cedar Mulch
Lasts longer than hardwood because it resists decomposition. Natural oils repel some insects. Light brown color with a pleasant smell. Costs more but you replace it less often, typically every 2 to 3 years instead of annually.
Colored Mulch
Dyed black, brown, or red to maintain color longer. Great for properties where curb appeal matters. Color lasts about a year before fading. Popular for front yard beds where you want consistent appearance all season.
Stone & Rock
Permanent option that never needs replacing. Works well around foundations and in areas where you do not want organic breakdown. Does not regulate soil temperature as well as wood mulch. Best for low maintenance areas with mature plants.
How Often Your Beds Need Fresh Mulch
Most Irondequoit properties need fresh mulch every year or every other year. Wood mulch breaks down over time, compacts, and fades. Once your mulch layer gets thin, weeds break through and soil dries out faster.
We recommend a 2 to 3 inch layer of mulch for best results. Too little and it does not work effectively. Too much and you can suffocate plant roots or create drainage problems. We measure and apply the right amount for your specific beds and plants.
